Pulau Pangkor is an island off the coast of Perak in north-west peninsular Malaysia, reached by ferry from Lumut. It’s got a land area of only eight square kilometers, and a population of roughly 25,000 islanders. It is heavily promoted as a low-key traveller destination by the Malaysian state, but fishing and fish products remain major industries. Traditionally , Pangkor was a refuge for local fishermen, merchants and pirates. In the 17th century, the Dutch constructed a fort to attempt to manipulate the Perak tin trade. In 1874, it was the positioning of a significant accord between the UK regime and a challenger for the Perak throne ( The Pangkor Bargain ), which commenced the UK colonial domination of the Malay Cape .

Pangkor is known for its fine beaches and a mixture of low budget to five star accommodations.

Teluk Nipah and Coral Bay on the north west of the island is intensely well liked by visitors from Europe. The quality of sand in the Pasir Bogak Beach is much better than that some place else on the island. The sand is golden brown, quite like most leading prime beaches. There are some resorts in Teluk Nipah or Nipah Bay. Since the 2004 Indian Sea tsunami in Indonesia, Thailand and to a smaller extent the western coast of Malaysia in December 2004, there were less local visitors visiting Pangkor. In 2006, a biotechnology centre, a partnership of World Hi-Q Malaysia S / B and Hi-Q Bio-Tech Global ( Taiwan ) Ltd commenced operations with primary investments of RM100million ( USD30m ). Their operations include fish farming and aquaculture, and the 1st crop is predicted in 2009. Just next to island of Pangkor, there’s a smaller island called Pulau Pangkor Laut.
